The Wise Penny Consignment Store on 8th Avenue
in Helena MT is currently being re-decorated and refinished.
It is still licensed and open by appointement with a limited selection of
garage sale items. More items coming when the redecoration is complete.
We hope to re-open as a Consignment Store, specializing in Fine Arts, Antiques,
Unique Gifts, Hard-to-find Novelties, and perhaps a little magic.

<< REMODEL HAS BEEN STOPPED BY LOCAL CITY PLANNERS >>
Under the present Helena City Codes, building owners cannot do any electrical
or plumbing (other than repair existing.) The existing space we intended to
use for a bath stall was 3" too small to meet the City ADA access standard. So
they would not issue us a plumbing permit to replace our sewer and install a small
convenience bathroom, although the building is grandfathered as a
historic building, and is not ADA accessible due to steps that are part
of the archetecture.
In 2001 our plans for installing a ramp and ADA accessible facilities in the retail
stores, was denied by the City, when we were remodeling the Guest House and
ordered to replace the sidewalks at the same time.
Since we were denied our permit, we know of at least other three retail spaces on Main Street,
also having one or more steps at their entry have remodeled, and have new,
but smaller than ours, public bath room spaces (documented), they
were not required to submit plans or apply for construction permits!
Nov 2014 Update,
City hired a New City Planning Department Director,
Our Plumber now says we can get a permit to put the bath
in that space directly between the retail stores (left door in photo),
but I have to cap and move all the 'new' bath wiring into that area from the space
I originally had intended for a bath, which will become the store room.
